Samples Challenge Day 13.

Background: I noticed that lately, my indie eyeshadow samples are not getting enough love, simply because it's easier for me to reach for tubs. So I decided to challenge myself to use them more often. Everyday, I pick 2 eyeshadow samples randomly out of my collection without looking, and I have to use them. I can add other products in, but the 2 colours have to be the main part of the look.

Today I got colours from Canadian companies! I drew Hello Waffle's Rapunzel (swatches here), which is a colour I personally hate on me, and Backstreets Makeup Co's Raven, which is a plain black (swatches here).

I decided to do my favourite "smoked" out liner look with these colours.

This is over primer only. The semi-bald patch is from where my eyes fold and smudge the eyeshadow.

There's a reason this is my favourite look, it's sooo freaking flattering on me. I was so happy, I think I took over 9000 selfies and maxed out my phone's memory space.

The lip colour is a colour I "created" by mixing several lipsticks, foundation and gloss. The cheek colour is Daisy Bird's You Bet I'm Blushing.

Review & Recommendation: 5 Scents from Sweet Anthem

I've been sending my Sweet Anthem Subscription box to my cousin, which is why there's a delay in my reviews. In this review, I'll be reviewing 2 solid scents and 3 alcohol perfume scents. For my previous review, you can head here.

If you read my previous review, I mentioned that while I didn't find any that worked for me, I still like the quality of these perfumes. I stand by that statement, these scents are amazing quality and I'm so glad I finally got scents that do work for me this time. As always, these reviews are done blind until the TL;DRs are written. If any of the notes surprise me, I write an overview:

Solid Perfume Reviews

_________________________________________

Annabelle

Head Notes: Sea Salt
Heart Notes: Jasmine, Osmanthus
Base Notes: White Amber

Creamy, clean white florals with a hint of tartness. The clean, white florals bit sells a lot like another Sweet Anthem scent –Lucille. I think I have to sniff both of them together. If I sniff really close to the skin, I get a hint of masculine "dustiness" that makes me think of cool, bitter, authentic powdered green tea. After about 30 min, the scent has a rounded candy-like sweetness to it, which really reminds me of Lucille.

TL;DR: Cool, clean, white florals.

Overview: Here are the notes for Lucille:
Head Notes: Sea Salt
Heart Notes: Jasmine, Linden Blossom
Base Notes: Amber, Rosewood, Tonka Bean
Ok, I see the same combination of sea salt, jasmine & amber, so that may be the clean, white florals part of the scent. The difference is that Lucille starts of with a chewy candy sort of rounded sweetness mingling with the clean, white florals, while Annabelle starts of with a sort of vaguely fruity tartness mingling with the same florals. As the scent wears on, both take on a bit of a "dusty" sort of quality, but Lucille is more of a warm, woody sort of "dustiness", while Annabelle is more of a cool, tea-like freshness with a hint of powder. Lucille definitely got warmer, creamier, and heavier as it wears on, and by the end of it, it's more of heavy florals with no trace of the chewy candy florals I loved so much. Meanwhile, Annabelle stayed cool and light, and began smelling closer to Lucille's start (though it doesn't smell as rounded and chewy-candy-ish).

So the TL;DR is: I love Lucille's start more, but prefer Annabelle's finish.

Phoebe

Head Notes: Maple Sugar, Snow
Heart Notes: Lavender
Base Notes: Dirt, Tobacco, White Amber

This is a heavier sort of sweet scent, and has a unique combination of masculine and feminine elements. On one hand, it has that heavy, old lady powdery scent and sweetness. On the other hand, it also has this cool, masculine sort of dirty bitterness. There's also a hint of tartness that I think may be a vanilla note going wrong or a more acrid sort of black tea note.

Anyway, this entire scent makes me think of an old, aristocratic English lady reading in the library of her stately home. All old lady perfume, warm coziness, aged leather-bound books and wood.

I was actually searching for a picture of an old English lady in a library, but then I stumbled on this and well...er...sharing's caring. So imagine this scene, but replace the hot dude with an old lady and you get this scent.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous photography by Joanna Kustra

While I personally like this scent, I think it's a tad too old for me. It does get lighter as time goes on, but it still smells more like a scent for someone in their 40s or 50s.  I'm still hanging on to this scent to sniff privately though, since it makes me think I'm transported into a cozy, library within an old English castle or manor, full of rare books you can drown yourself in.

TL;DR: Old, aristocratic English lady reading in the library of her stately home.

Alcohol Perfume Reviews

Agatha

Head Notes: Petit Grain Mandarin
Heart Notes: Orris, Peony
Base Notes: Caramel

At first, I got searing unidentifiable tart roomspray, but there's this chewy candy scent underneath. The searing bit calmed down enough for me to identify it, but it's still that searing feeling on your nose when you have perfume/room spray sprayed too close to you. It now smells like a citrus room spray and a floral chewy candy. I like the chewy candy base, but the searing bit gives me a bit of a headache. After about 10min, I also got traces of that calcium supplement sort of cloying dustiness.

TL;DR: Citrus room spray and a floral chewy candy.

Overview: Maybe this would smell way better with just the orris, peony and caramel?

Lenore

Head Notes: Pineapple
Heart Notes: Orange Blossom
Base Notes: Fern, White Musk

Oh my god this is amazing! This smells like summer to me –fresh, light white florals with hints of green. Something about this makes me think of beaches and breezes. It's such a light, clean and fresh sort of floral. If I'm picking a picture to create a perfume ad for this scent, it'll definitely be this:

Gorgeous photo by Jean-Baptiste Fort

I love it! I'm definitely thinking of getting a full size of this!

TL;DR: Beach-y fresh, light white florals with green.

Overview: Pineapples! I think that's what was giving this scent the tropical feel. I tried sniffing it again and the pineapple blends so well with the other scents, it's not noticeable even when you know it's there.

Ulalume

Head Notes: Black Pepper, Ylang Ylang
Heart Notes: Gardenia
Base Notes: Dried Leaves

This smells old and kinda dusty, but it's definitely a unique sort of old and dusty scent I've never encountered before (ie. it's not the usual patchouli sort of "old" smell). Initially, I got that acrid black tea note scent, but it dissipated by 3 min. It still lingers giving the scent this touch of dried, dusty leaves. There's also waxy florals in this and a sort of coolness to this that makes me think of winter. The smell makes me think of sifting through old scrapbooks in the attic while snowed in, while applying a really thick floral hand cream to beat the winter dryness.

It's a feminine scent, but a bit leaning towards masculine. As weird as this sounds, I can totally see it as a great scent for a high-ranking career woman (probably in her 30s). The kind of woman whose tastes lean towards masculine and is comfortable in even the most male-dominated conservative-minded boardrooms, yet still looks like Gong Li in a suit.

She's one of the reasons I thought a corporate job would be fun. Turns out, you need a body like Gong Li's to look like Gong Li in a suit.

TL;DR: Kicking ass in the boardroom while looking hot like Gong Li.

Overview: On second sniff, I can catch a sniff of the black pepper. It's behind the bitter coolness that makes me think of winter, funnily enough, and also adds to the "dusty" sort of feel to the scent. Ylang ylang always smells like a cottony, baby oil-ish flower to me and I guess mixed with the gardenia, it becomes the waxy florals.

DIY Cosmetics: Easy to Follow Eyeshadow Recipes

As you've seen from my last two posts here and here, I've been making some eyeshadows and promising to share the recipes. Keeping my promise here!

So, I recently received sample sizes of TKB Trading's Matte Blue Pop, Matte Red Pop & Shimmer Lemon Pop. They're basically TKB's ready to wear loose eyeshadows. Since I recently purchased TKB's Planetary Sampler, I thought it would be fun to make some colour-shifting duochromes using Method #2 in my guide to making eyeshadows  –just mixing a bunch of colours together.

These are the results:

Terry Pratchett Inspired makeup
All swatched over Darling Girl's glitter glue, at different angles under the same natural light

I don't mind sharing the recipes for these because I really hope you guys have as much fun as I did, but if you do decide to try these recipes out, please credit me and let me know! I'd love to see your results!

______________________________________

To create these colours, you'll need:

  • The colours from the recipes
    • Matte Blue Pop
    • Matte Red Pop
    • Shimmer Lemon Pop
    • Travel to Earth
    • Travel to Jupiter
    • Travel to Mars
    • Travel to Neptune
    • Travel to Pluto
    • Travel to Venus
These are all available at TKB trading. Personally for me, a sample size is more than enough (6g for the Pop eyeshadows, 2.5g for the planetary micas). To help you figure out what those numbers mean, a typical MAC eyeshadow contains 1.5g of eyeshadow.
  • A spoon for each colour you want to make. It'll make your life easier if you have a spoon for each colour instead of needing to constantly clean up. Make sure they're of identical size so you can measure accurately. If you're looking for small spoons, I usually steal those plastic coffee stirrers from coffee shops
  • Alcohol for disinfecting. Someone once asked if sanitizing wipes are ok...I haven't tried it yet, but I'd avoid it because some of them have fragrance and you may discover your eyes are sensitive to that. Keep it simple, stick to alcohol.
  • Ziplock bags
  • Eyeshadow jars to put your final work in (optional)

______________________________________

These are the really simple steps to do this:

1. Disinfect everything. You don't want eye infections from a dirty work place. Disinfect your spoons, your jars, the table you're working on. Everything.
2. Measure out the colours as mentioned in each recipe and put them inside a ziplock bag.
3. Close the bag and squish them together until they're well blended.
4. You're done! You can use them out of the bag or pour them into eyeshadow jars, it's your call.

Anyway, here are the detailed swatches and recipes. I decided to name these eyeshadows based on Terry Pratchett quotes because I really want to share with everyone how awesome this guy is. The world really lost a brilliant mind.

Wasted Chances

“Ginger: You know what the greatest tragedy is in the whole world?... It's all the people who never find out what it is they really want to do or what it is they're really good at. It's all the sons who become blacksmiths because their fathers were blacksmiths. It's all the people who could be really fantastic flute players who grow old and die without ever seeing a musical instrument, so they become bad plowmen instead. It's all the people with talents who never even find out. Maybe they are never even born in a time when it's even possible to find out. It's all the people who never get to know what it is that they can really be. It's all the wasted chances.”

Monochrome Look for Indie Truth or Dare!

Ok, so I still have one more look I have to create for IMAM's Indie Truth or Dare, /u/whoadangjamie's challenge:

Dare: Create a monochrome look with a color you wouldn't typically reach for.
I decided to make this a bit more interesting and basically create a look with just 1 colour on my eyes, cheeks & lips:

The colour is Set Fire and I'll be posting the recipe to create it later! Here's some eye close ups:

Close up of the lips. I just patted the colour on my lips over lip balm:

By the way, it's very pigmented as a blush, so use sparingly. This was my first failed attempt:

Review: 6 Scents from Smelly Yeti

I ordered from Smelly Yeti ages ago but unfortunately only got around to reviewing them now. Check out how my order arrived!

The TAT I got was pretty good!

  • Order date: Oct 16
  • Shipping date: Oct 20

Only 4 days to ship out my stuff! I didn't have an issue I needed to contact her about in my order, so that's all I can comment on the CS.

Anyway, on to scent reviews, which are done blind as usual. Overviews are written if any of the notes surprise me.

Beauty Queen

"A sorbet sundae that's fruity sour, and above all, cool, this perfume features pomegranate, lemon, lime, blackcurrant, raspberry, and rich vanilla with a hint of ice cream sweetness."

This smells like a pink fruit punch. Definitely sweet and fruity. At first it just smells like someone dumped fruit punch on me, but after about 10 min, it becomes more wearable as a perfume since the sweetness calmed down and there's also this cool, dry and rich sort of peachy-citrus scent. It kind of reminds me of Sixteen92's Lolita, but it doesn't have that light, bursting with juices feel that Lolita has. It's more weighed down and threatens to go room-spray every now and then.

TL;DR: Pink fruit punch.

Captain Peroxide

"Dirty leather coat, smoky tobacco, bleached hair, with a soft spot for a certain slayer. He may act tough, but at the heart of it all he's a marshmallow. Red Egyptian musk gives it a smooth finish and a distinctive bloody coloring. This is the scent that has it all. Sweet but dingy. Smoky and sexy. This perfume is practically bottled pheromones."

I smell smoke and what smells like kacang hijau, an Indonesian mung bean dessert soup. It's the creamy sort of green bean soup rather than the healthier ones that doesn't have any cream or santan (coconut cream).

I've been eating this every morning. I should probably monitor my blood sugar levels...

The smoke is really prominent on me and smells like I'm burning, but then again, my skin loves amping up smoke.

TL;DR: Burning, creamy Indonesian green bean dessert soup.

Overview: I'm not sure what's causing the mung bean dessert scent, maybe it's a combination of all those notes? I do know that vetiver sometimes turn into mung beans on me, so maybe there's a quiet vetiver note somewhere? I think I can sniff out the leather on a second sniff after reading the notes, but I'm not sure if that's just the power of suggestion or I got better at separating it from the smoke note.

Hey, McFly!

"Inspired by old 50s ice cream parlors, this scent mixes fizzy cola and root beer with sweetshop vanilla to create a surprisingly unisex/masculine end result."

This smells like a cool root beer candy. It lacks the fizziness of root beer and goes really sweet, and that's why it's more root beer candy, or root beer that has gone flat for days, rather than actual root beer to me. There's hints of that Baygon (a popular Indonesian insecticide) note  that perfumers often label as "concrete", "stone", "asphalt", etc.  This note also appears in Alkemia's Prairie 66Blooddrop's Moonstone, and Black Violet's Apparition & Komorebi.

Unfortunately, the Baygon note gets stronger with time until it takes over the root beer candy scent by 10 min. About 15 min in, I'm getting that cottony baby oil scent. By 25 min, it's mostly just that cottony baby oil scent, with hints of Baygon. No more root beer :(

TL;DR: Root beer candy –> Baygon –> baby oil & baygon

________________________________________

Not The Bees

"It might actually be more accurate to call this "Yes The Bees" because this perfume is a lovely sweet confection of candied honey and honeysuckle, punctuated by citrus and underscored with smooth vanilla."

At first, it's that searing version of fried bread note with honey. I thought this would be another scent that would give me a headache. There's even a hint of that sourness that some vanilla/caramel notes turn into on me. After about 5 min, the searing sweetness started calming down on me, hinting at a much better scent. By about 30 min, the searing bit finally disappeared and it becomes this waxy honey sort of scent. It's a pretty common waxy honey note, similar to Alchemic Muse's Zombee. There's hints of something floral, but it's mostly waxy honey. While I do like the waxy honey scent, I don't know if I want to wait 30 min to get it.

TL;DR: Searing fried bread note with honey, turning into waxy honey.

Ouran

"Roses. Bulgarian roses. English roses. Rosehip jasmine, pikake flower, and yuzu. Basically, FLOWERS. Plus, a hint of the tropical flavor that signifies the mark of a true silly anime - the token beach episode."

This is a gorgeous, cool, blue honeyed scent, with a hint of tartness. The honeyed tartness starts going crazy on my skin and getting searingly sweet like a car perfume, unfortunately. I'm really sad about this since the cool, blue scent at the base stayed so amazing. It's the same cool, clean scent in Sixteen92's Raven. The kind that makes you think of clean, bright colonial style homes that look like this:

This is actually a home in Singapore...found it totally coincidentally XD
http://kidsroomideapicture.blogspot.com

I really, really love the base, but the searing bit is giving me a bit of a headache. I wish the searing, piercing bit that's going crazy on me will just disappear, but then it'll just end up smelling like a dupe of Sixteen92's Raven. I think I'm going to age this for about a year before swapping it.

TL;DR: Sixteen92's Raven with a searing sweet tartness.

________________________________________

Pipsqueak

"A funky and fruity and extremely tweeny blend of mulberry, strawberry, and sparkling lime."

Bubblegum! The sugary pink ones! Unfortunately, after about 5 min, there's a slightly piercing citrus room spray sort of scent. The roomspray citrus started taking over the scent, with the pink bubblegum sitting in the background, so now it smells like a pink-citrus bathroom room spray.

TL;DR: Pink-citrus bathroom room spray.

Samples Challenge Day 12.

Today is a bit of a special edition of the samples challenge. IMAM had an Indie Truth or Dare thread and these are my dares:

/u/whoadangjamie

Dare: Create a monochrome look with a color you wouldn't typically reach for.

Honestly, I rarely pick up browns/neutrals, but I'll make it more fun and pick colours that I normally hate. This I have to save later, but

Now these 3 challences look like they can be combined:

/u/wakenda
I dare you to pull three samples for your sample challenge!

/u/niamhellen
Dare: I've seen you do tonnes of pretty, bright eye looks. I'd love to see you go neutral on the eyes and do something crazy with the lips or face!

/u/agrumes
Dare: Do a look with blue/green/unusual color lipsticks :p

So here's my 3-colour Sample Challenge colours that I selected randomly – Ten Three Labs' Thank You For Loving Me (swatches here), and Backstreets Makeup Co's The Mintalist & Kricka (swatches here).

I decided to go with an ombré liner because Kricka is one of my favourite colours, and I wanted to show more of it.

Don't have a proper close eye photo, because I opened my eyes too fast and ended up with a scrunched up, tacky mess hidden under my lids.

For the crazy lips, it's Fyrinnae's Burrowing Owl!

I decided to do another look so I don't feel like I'm cheating too much. This is a more neutral eye look, but even crazier lips.

The colours are Limnit's League of My Own & Abracadabra (swatches here). I had to go on a 5am flight for a client meeting, so I figured I'd cheer myself up with colourful lips since I don't have time to do much with my eyes (hence, no close up). I figured I'd just look fabulous during the flight, wipe it off as soon as I land, and then show up at my clients' factory looking boring....

Boring eye make up, fun lip make up.

........turned out I was on the same flight as my client. I stupidly didn't realize there was ONLY ONE morning flight, so everyone's on it. Had to rub off my lipstick on an old receipt I found in my bag because I don't  carry tissues with me. T.T

Samples Challenge Day 11.

Today I got pretty awesome colours! Notoriously Morbid's She's Full of Secrets (swatch here) & Ten Three Labs' It's Your Funeral (swatch here).

Unfortunately, I had a meeting today so I had to keep it relatively simple. Well....as simple as you can go with such bright, vibrant colours...

monolid make up

Isn't it pretty? This is with primer only! Unfortunately, with primer only, the eyeshadow ended up with one big bald hole where my monolids fold in.

monolid make up

I'm just going to pretend that was totally intentional. Full face! The lipstick is a frankenlipstick I made ages ago.
