Review: 8 Scents from NAVA's Halloween Collection

I ordered decants of Nocturne Alchemy VApothecary's (NAVA's) Halloween collection last year, but never got around reviewing all of them since I got lazy about reviewing discontinued items. NAVA brought back back a bunch of them though, so I'm finally reviewing them now! Since it's been a year, all these perfumes have been aged, so they may smell different from a fresh batch. For my previous NAVA reviews which also covers many of the currently available returning scents, you can head here or click on the NAVA tag on the right.

Review Notes

As always, reviews are done blind until the TL;DRs are written. If any of the notes surprise me, I write an overview. I've also started adding a "Final Verdict" section to help me keep track of my perfumes and figure out what to destash, since my perfume collection is starting to get messy. Here are the categories I came up with for my "Final Verdict":

  • Love: Most awesome perfume ever. Need endless supplies of it and will swap my first born child for the last drops of it if it's limited edition. < 5% of scents I try.
  • Like: I like it and may buy a full size of it, but it's not urgent. About 20-30% of scents I try.
  • Interesting: I don't really like it or I don't think I  can wear it in public, but I appreciate the artistry of the scent. It's like a beautiful but unwearable runway piece you won't buy on your own, but don't mind owning. With indie scents, that's about 20-30% of scents I try.
  • Ok: It's okay. I like it enough, but may destash for a good price to keep my collection manageable. About 50% of scents I try.
  • Destash: Kill it with fire. About 10-40% of scents I try, depending on how adventurous my mood is was while shopping and how familiar I am with the perfumer's strengths.
  • Age it: Maybe it will smell good one day. One day. Just wait.

Ghost Ship

"Pirate Rum, Pumpkin Rum, Vanilla-Myrrh, Madagascar Black Sandalwood, Black Amber and syrup of Black Crystal Vanilla infused Benzoin-Musk aged in a cedar Pirate Barrel."

The first burst I got from this is a masculine blue musk that reminds me of older gentlemen in wood-filled rooms –I can see it being a cabin in a ship from the olden days when everything was made of wood. The scent quickly becomes rather soapy, so it makes me think more of a modernized "old" ship cabin where everything smells really clean and soapy, but there hints of old wood. Something like this:
This is La Sultana, an old Soviet spy ship turned into a luxury yacht....gorgeous, but costs $250,000/week to charter.
After about 3-5 min, unfortunately, it starts smelling like one of those cheap, white motel bar soaps that smells vaguely floral, with old wood. There's also a slight tartness in the scent, but the white hotel bar soap definitely dominates.

As the scent dries down, the cheap, white motel bar soap keeps getting more and more dominant until that's all the scent that's left lingering on my skin as the scent fades.

TL;DR: Cheap, white motel bar soap.

Overview: I'm not sure what's creating that cheap, white motel bar soap bit. The vanilla myrrh mixed with rum maybe?

Final Verdict: Destash

Poison Pumpkin

"SINnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Vanilla, Pumpkin Puree, Cream, Crystal, Kobalt were the first ingredients in the perfume recipe....White Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Vanilla, Pumpkin Puree, Cream, Crystal, Kobalt, Labdanum, Black Patchouli, Black Musk, Black Vanilla, Black Coconut."

Oh wow. This is the creamiest pumpkin ever. It's pumpkin with heavy, thick, velvety coconut cream, and smells so delicious. It could get too heavy for some people, but if you're a fan of creamy gourmands, this is a scent you want to curl up in bed and go to sleep in. It makes me feel so satisfied and sleepy. It's the feeling of staring at an empty Thanksgiving dessert table and thinking, "Yup. I polished that off all on my own. Good job self!"

There were hints of some note threatening to go sour on me, but luckily, it never did go sour. It's so delicious.

Between 3-20 min, there's a chai spices sort of scent that enters and keeps getting stronger, until I start thinking of creamy Indonesian dessert soups –the ones that have gula melaka (a kind of very fragrant, brown coconut sugar), coconut milk, ginger, and cloves. This scent is a bit heavier on the cloves than the typical Indonesian desserts though.

After about 20 min, I'm getting a dry wood resin in the scent, but it's still mostly that delicious, coconut-y creamed pumpkin that just makes you feel so satisfied and full. The dry wood resin is the kind that smells almost "dusty". The pumpkins started smelling more like wet, boiled pumpkins about 5-8 min later (25-28 min into the scent) and the spices get more spicy. It's starting to remind me a bit of a fall candle, and it does get closer to a fall candle as it dries down, but there's still a lot of the delicious coconut & pumpkin.

I really, really LOVE the start of this perfume and considered buying a full size even though I'm all pumpkin-ed out, but I'm hesitating just because I'm not really a fan of the scent as it dries down.

TL;DR: Creamiest pumpkin ever.

Final Verdict: Love.

Pumpkin Spice & Black Honey

"With the sensuality of our black honey perfume comes a deeper black honey aroma that surrounds the spices of Nutmeg, White Cinnamon, Cardamom, Black Fig, Pumpkin Flesh, Pumpkin-Vanilla-Cream and a drop of Pumpkin infused clove, with drippy rich black honey accord created in the summer of 2014 and left to age in an oak barrel, there will be a touch of oak wood infused naturally into the perfume."

The first burst I got from this scent is soooo amazing. It's a rich complex honey and fresh plant stalk, mixed with that type of creamy pumpkin note in the background that doesn't smell like pumpkins and not really noticeable outrightly in the scent, but just leaves you feeling full and satisfied. I was actually surprised by the fresh plant stalk because I wasn't expecting that zesty, fresh plant stalk scent in a fall scent, but the zest didn't last long since the pumpkin rounds it out as the scent settles on my skin.

The scent is delicious and so very complex! The honey is just so rich and complex, I can only describe it as melodic. I think I'm going to start recommending NAVA for honey notes! Another NAVA scent, Zillah, has one of my favourite honey notes ever.

I start getting a sort of waxy scent after about 3-5 min in. It stays close to my skin, and the overall scent is still amazing, but it does bug me a bit. I wonder what's causing it. The freshness mellowed out and mixed with the pumpkins make me think of wet, boiled pumpkins in a good way. This scent is boiled pumpkins and waxy honey. It sounds plain, but it's really rich and complex. Creamy pumpkin scents tend to make me feel cozy and snuggly –like curling into bed at home with a fluffy pillow. This scent does feel like curling into bed at home with a fluffy pillow....only your home's a picturesque dream home like this one:

You guys need to check out Adnan Bubalo's photos....I end up wanting to quit my job and just travel around the world.

As it dries down, the honey becomes less melodic and the scent gradually becomes that metallic scent some vanilla/cake scents dries down into on my skin.

TL;DR: Boiled pumpkins and waxy honey –in an AWESOME way.

Final Verdict: Love

Trick or Treat

"Black Vanilla Caramel, Black Raspberry Sugar, Black Sugar, Bastet's Black Amber, Candy Corn, Black Cotton Candy, Blue Sugar Cream, Vanilla Flesh, Hot Cocoa Accord, Chocolate Sugar, Angel Food Cake and French Vanilla."

Mmmmm...cherry liqueur filled chocolate truffles! Real ones, not the cheap, artificial kind. It's so amazing and I have to resist trying to lick my skin!

After about 10 min, there's this beautiful, comforting lotion-y sort of musk entering the scent, but  that part stays closer to the skin while it's mostly cherry liqueur chocolate truffles wafting around. The effect created feels like dress shopping in a very understatedly luxurious, classy boutique that serves cherry liqueur filled chocolate truffles, while a personal shopper selects styles personalized to your tastes.

When the scent dries down, it reverts back to cherry liqueur filled chocolate truffle, though it's not as "melodic" as the initial burst.

TL;DR: Cherry liqueur filled chocolate truffle

Overview: Oops, looks like it's raspberry instead of cherries. I still think it smells like cherry liqueur filling though, which smells more like a sweet, syrupy red candy instead of a fragrant fruit.

Final Verdict: Love

Make Me REZ

"Ethereal Essences of Blue Musk, Red Musk, Blood Saffron left to age and sifted out, Wormwood, Blue Sugar, Pink Sugar, Black Sugar, Bastet's Amber Dragon’s Blood Amber, Wood Violet, Vanilla Absolute, Orange Zest, Sweet Musk, Sandalwood-infused-Patchouli, Boswellia Serrata, Sea Buckthorn, Davana, Liquid Ginger Essence, Nepalese Amber, drop of Black Myrrh, Blue Sandalwood, Pink Pepper, Black Salt, Amber Resin liquefied." –notes coutesy of salixnoir.livejournal.com

Initially, I got sugary honey mixed with clean, light white musk. Depending on which period of the month, I could sometimes pick out hints of woody incense in this part. At other periods of the month the sugar bit gets amplified, and I get hints of a chemical-ish sort of scent that reminds me of bathroom cleaners instead. It's still a pretty scent though!

After about 10 min, the white musk bit takes on that cottony, baby oil quality and turns into that scent that's often described as "Egyptian musk". It's still a clean, classically elegant scent that's not so light but definitely not heavy either. The scent makes me think of very elegant and demure new mothers who end up looking more beautiful and radiant with motherhood instead of haggard and harassed. It's the kind of woman who'll still look gorgeous on a Tatler cover, even after she just popped a baby out.

It's the scent of contentment from having perfect babies in a perfect family while wearing the perfect dress and looking perfect as always. She'll even wear those elegant, flowy white dresses at home instead of stained loose t-shirts and shorts, which would totally be my uniform when I have kids. She's the kind of woman who'll make you feel clumsy and clunky around her without meaning to, but you can't hate her because she's so sweet and acts like the mom everyone wished they had as a kid. I feel almost more maternal and elegant just by sniffing this. This picture totally captures this scent:

And of course, the dress looks gorgeous on her instead of looking like a sack I've kidnapped from my grandma's closet.
Gorgeous photography by Alena Romanovskaya

As it dries down, it gets more woody. It's still clean, but there's hints of old wood.

TL;DR: Elegant, content young mother.

Final Verdict: Like

White Zombie REZ

"Cemetery Soil of a Zombie grave, Zombie Flesh (leather accord), Japanese Ghost Pine, Crystalline Vanilla (Egyptian Vanilla Orchid stigma Resin), White Musk, Sweet Incense Smoke, Aged Redwood Bark, Russian Teak, Black Forest Extract, N5 Musk (White Egyptian Musk - sensual and slightly spicy), White Pine Needles and Cemetery Musk."–notes coutesy of salixnoir.livejournal.com

The first note I noticed is that watery scent that could be a leather note gone wrong. It's not a blue "water" scent, it's that almost metallic, watery scent that makes me think of water dripping out of corrugated pipe. It's mixed in with a this powdery note and has hints of a berry sort of tartness. The powdery part reminds me of that sort of delicate but slightly heady powdery scent you get from brand new leather seats inside a brand new car.

The tart bit keeps getting more and more dominant on me, so by about 15 min into the scent, I'm getting a berry tartness mixed with powdery, brand new leather seats.

As the scent dries down, I'm getting a dry woodiness and the tartness reminds me more of that acrid black tea note that ends up smelling like dry, dusty, Chinese preserved fruits.

TL;DR: Powdery, brand new leather seats with a berry tartness.

Overview: I'm guessing the tartness is from vanilla going sour on me?

Final Verdict: Ok

Moon Dust: Kashmir

"Deep aged Kashmir Red Musk, NA Ethereal Incense Accord, MORE Blue Sandalwood (unreleased), MORE Blue Moonstone (unreleased), MORE Blue Amber (unreleased), Moonstone (African White Vanilla Bean) Studio Limited, Sweet Gray Frankincense Resin and Blue Chypre of Copenhagen."  –notes coutesy of salixnoir.livejournal.com

Oh gods. I mentioned this before, and I'll say it again: I have to avoid anything with Kashmir from NAVA. I've never been to Kashmir, but if I'm basing my impression of Kashmir from NAVA's Kashmir scents, I'd imagine Kashmir to be overflowing with smelly bush animals, because there's always that game-y incense note. Sure, in this scent, it's mixed with that cottony, baby oil scent that's sometimes marketed as Egyptian musk, but the incense still dominates.

To be fair, as the scent dries down, it gets lighter and there's this beautiful, light scent that I can only describe as silvery. It's not a sweet, tinkly sort of silvery that makes you think of Christmas bells, but it is that sparkly silvery that makes you think of moonlight over a lake...but the incense still dominates. I hate anything Kashmir from NAVA.

TL;DR: Silvery game-y incense.

Final Verdict: Destash

Bleed REZ

"Rich Kashmir Blood-Musk-Infused Incense, Fossilized Amber, Deep Wood Oudh, Leather Accord (vegan), Balsam of Peru, Champaca, Styrax, Dragon’s Blood Amber, Black Incense, Wood Violet, Orange Zest, Sweet Musk, Sandalwood-infused-Patchouli, Boswellia Serrata, Sea Buckthorn, Black Musk, Davana, Tonka Absolute, Liquid Ginger Essence, Nepalese Amber, drop of Black Myrrh, Blue Sandalwood, Pink Pepper, Blue Sugar, Black Salt, Amber Resin liquefied." –notes coutesy of salixnoir.livejournal.com

Noooooo. There's that incense again. Ugh. Stupid, game-y incense. I don't know if it's NAVA's signature scent or just signature for the Halloween collection. Ugh. There's a red candy mixed into the scent and a musky scent that strikes me as "red", but the that game-y incense note still dominates. I hate that freaking game-y incense note.

As the scent dries down on me, it starts turning into that white hotel bar soap scent. No idea why. With the game-y incense, of course.

TL;DR: Game-y incense with red candy & red musk. Then it turns into white hotel bar soap.

Overview: See? Kashmir. Screw Kashmir.

Objectively though, if you love that game-y incense Kashmir note, you'd love the different ways NAVA incorporates it into new scents. You'll definitely end up going broke in an attempt to get every iteration of this Kashmir note, because I usually end up falling in love with the rest of the scent that excludes the Kashmir bit. If you love the Kashmir bit, I'm pretty sure you'd be in perfume heaven.

I've been comparing the notes for this scent with Ghost Ship's since the white hotel bar soap dry down is a bit similar. Here are the notes for Ghost Ship:

"Pirate Rum, Pumpkin Rum, Vanilla-Myrrh, Madagascar Black Sandalwood, Black Amber and syrup of Black Crystal Vanilla infused Benzoin-Musk aged in a cedar Pirate Barrel."

The notes they seem to have in common are: myrrh, amber & sandalwood. I'm not sure how that creates a hotel bar soap scent, but my main suspect is myrrh.

Final Verdict: Destash

Review: NAVA'S Poppy Z. Brite collection

I got all 5 scents from Nocturne Alchemy VApothecary (NAVA's) Poppy Z. Brite collection from Ajevie's decants!
Ajevie's awesome as always!

This is my second time reviewing NAVA and my previous review can be found here. As always, these scent reviews are done blind until the TL;DRs are written. If the notes surprise me I write an overview.

Christian

"Aged Blood Wine, Shiraz Wine, Red Musk Syrup, Russian Leather Accord, Tobacco-Musk and Egyptian Musk."

At fist I got the familiar smelly incense I've expected from NAVA, but luckily it disappeared. The scent I got left with is some watery, red fruit scent. It's the same red fruit I get from NAVA's Vampire Queen, only it's a bit more childish in this version.

There's also a masculine bitter musk to this that makes me think of cigar lounge with leather furniture. The scent makes me think of the owner of a cigar lounge hastily cleaning up the lounge for a "Take Your Daughter to Work" day, and spraying the place with one of her favourite scents –an artificial red fruit candy sort of scent.

So imagine the scent of this:

After it's been sprayed by this:

This is supposed to be a Strawberry Fragrance Hair & Body Glitter Spray. I've never sniffed this before, but I imagine it to have this artificial red fruit candy sort of smell.

It's a weird juxtaposition of old and masculine with young and girly, and definitely unique.

TL;DR: Cigar lounge sprayed with a kiddy fruity scent

Overview: So these are the notes in Vampire Queen:

"Black Honey, Blood Wine and Cardamom. Threads of Black Saffron, Nile Patchouli and Black Musk. A drop of Blood Musk, Temple NA and Crimson scent the Vampire Queen."

I guess the blood wine note is that red fruit sort of note.

Ghost

"Ethereal tincture of five Vanilla Incense Accords (Absolute, 44, Pure, French and Tibetan), Spun Sugar, Skin Musk, a drop of Clove."

At first, I got a citrus-y vanilla, but the citrus part is the kind of citrus that makes me suspect a note is going sour on me. There's a cottony musk to it. The cottony musk takes over though, and now this scent becomes a watery, clear, cottony musk scent. If it stayed this way, it'll be perfect. It smells like a clean hotel room, in a hotel where they make everything very fluffy and soft.

Unfortunately, it keeps morphing until there's this extremely thin, sickly sweet yet bitter, chemical-ish smell that gives me a headache. I wonder if there's myrrh in this. BathSabbath's scent with frankincense & myrrh ended up smelling like whiteboard marker on me, and this is a similar chemical-ish smell as that.

When the scent dries down, it's mostly a musky cotton & vanilla scent.

TL;DR: Lab accident + vanilla

Overview: Ok, I have no idea what's causing the extremely chemical-ish note.

Nothing

"Strawberry Accord, White Patchouli smoke, Gothic Pumpkin Spice (Cardamom, Black Cinnamon, Clove-Tobacco), Vanilla Musk Cream, Gold Sandalwood and a drop of Nag Champa Incense."

At first, this smells like a slight nutty chai. The chai is the real Indian chai (not the weak Starbucks kind) that warms you up and has cardamom and a billion woody looking bits in it. As it wears on, there's a tart berry scent and the nutty bit gets creamier and creamier, until it smells exactly like Christmas. Warm, creamy chai, red berries something woody in the background. It smells like Christmas morning.

TL;DR: Christmas morning.

Steve

"Five Skin Musks, smoke, a drop of North Carolina Red Maple accord, Honey-Amber Resin and Wood Sugar Musk."

My boyfriend sniffed this when I applied it and declared it smells like a "Thai hotel lobby". I can see what he's talking about, this smells like woody honey with a clean, soapy touch. The clean, soapy touch has a lemongrass sort of freshness to it, even though I don't smell actual lemongrass. I think the wood and lemongrass sort of freshness just makes me think of Thailand...or the elegant Thai women who smell like all they use is soap to scent themselves, but once you get to know them, you realize it's a crazy expensive perfume that's designed to smell like it's just soap.

The sweet bit got higher and thinner as the scent wears on, and by 10 min, it's very reminiscent of the sickly sweet, cloying chemically scent I got in Ghost. It's not as bad as Ghost though.

TL;DR: Woody honey with a clean, soapy touch + cloying chemicals.

Overview: I'm not sure if that cloying chemical scent is coming from the sugar, skin musk or a combination of both. Either way, I'm avoiding combinations of sugar and skin musk from NAVA.

Zillah

"Chartreux (Chartreuse) accord of blended herbs and honey, Green Musk, French Green Cognac (Parisian), Wormwood essential oil, Red Cedar and N4 Musk (Magnolia Blossom, Egyptian Blue Heather Musk, Blue Sandalwood, Muguet and Egyptian Musk)."

First, I got a musky honey, and the musk is that cottony musk in Ghost. Then, a fresh sort of green scent comes in. The honey is what I start thinking of as The NAVA honey note, which is a thin, sharp, woody sort of rich honey note that I personally love. I can see some people finding it searing, but for me, it smells like a honey I'd gladly slather on myself because it smells so good.

The scent is a warm, cozy sort of honey scent, and it makes me think of walking among tall grass in the soft, golden, morning light, while sniffing the most glorious honey scent. A perfect picture to accompany this scent will be this one:

Though a cottage will fit the scent more than that palace thing in the background.
Gorgeous photography by Alexander Vinogradov

TL;DR: Warm, cozy, musky honey with fresh grass.

Review: 12 of NAVA's Fall/Halloween Scents

Thanks to Ajevie's awesome decants (link to her decant circle page here), I got to try out a bunch of scents from Nocturne Alchemy VApothecary (NAVA)!

I know I've raved about Ajevie before, but I have to keep doing it whenever I mention her. Her decant circles are amazing. Not only do you get to try samples of perfumes that do not come in sample form, she's also fast, organized, and so freaking helpful. Check out how she labels the decants too!

Name, Brand, Year & Notes. So freaking helpful!

While it makes it harder for me to review stuff blind (I've trained my eyes to glaze over the descriptions), it makes organizing my collection so easy. Head here if you want to join in her decant circles!

Oh, one thing to remember if you're an international customer and ordering from Ajevie, NAVA's collections gets sold out/discontinued relatively fast (1-2 months). This sucks for international customers, since international shipping can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks (sometimes even pushing 5 if customs get cranky). As you can guess, ordering decants gets stressful since there's a huge chance the scents will sell out before the decants get to you.

You're also forced to choose between combining decant orders to save on expensive international shipping, or spend extra to avoid the risk of missing out on getting the scents you like. I ended up not combining my shipping, but most of the scents were still gone by the time I finally finished trying them out. It definitely puts me off from ordering from NAVA, especially since the scents are not straightforward scents you can figure out from the description.

Perfume Oils General Review

The throw of these perfumes are great. They start of at faux whispering distance, though you can catch whiffs of it as you type if you put it on your hand. It stays at this strength for about 1 1/2 - 2h, but you can get traces on your skin for over 12h. While I didn't find many scents I like from these collections, I still like the quality. One thing I noticed is that NAVA's very good at capturing that ancient wood scent, and a lot of scents contain that note. While I'm impressed by it, I smell like I've just busted out of an ancient coffin, or have spent my life in a Japanese/Chinese temple.

As always, all scent reviews are done blind until the TL;DR's written. I write an overview if any notes surprise me.

Bell Book & Candle

"Leather accords, golden amber notes and soft honey, wax, smoke and white patchouli essences, just a pinch of black saffron and a drop of marzipan."

There's this chemical smell that smells exactly like spilled ink and honey. It's a bit disconcerting since I feel like I'm not supposed to be sniffing this. My skin eats this scent up particularly fast, because by slightly over 5 minutes, the scent has gone faint and I have to get close to my skin to sniff it. It's pretty weird since it started off as a burst of spilled ink that can fill up an entire elevator. The scent it leaves lingering on my skin is honey, a watery plastic and ink. Only the ink is more like the scent you get on your notebook after writing with a ballpoint pen rather than a pool of spilled ink. The watery plastic smells like that watery plastic some perfumers use as their "leather" note.

While searching for pics of spilled ink, I mostly only found clip arts. That probably shows how old school it is...

Random thought, with everything done on computers right now, I wonder how long it'll take before some kid reads what I wrote and goes, "Whoa! Ink! That's so vintage!"

TL;DR: Spilled ink & honey.

Overview: From the name, I'm not surprised by the spilled ink, but from the description, I definitely wouldn't guess it. This is why I'm worried about buying NAVA blind.

Black Crystal Candy Apple

"Black Vanilla and Black Vanilla Musk, and sweet plum, Black Musk and Black Amber, Sweet apples and a kiss of black sugar."

I'm confused. There's a very clean, soapy apple scent, but at the base, there's this delicious, edible baked goods smell. I'm not sure if I'm hungry or wanting a bath. The apple soap is definitely not the handwash type of soap -it's more of one of those luxurious, exquisitely wrapped bar soaps that's supposedly made by nuns for a few hundred generations or so.

This is from Santa Maria Novella and actually created by Dominican Friars since 1221! If you ever visit Florence, you have to visit this place. Whenever I think I'm in an upscale European apothecary, I think of that place. It's so beautiful!
You can buy it online from Privet House

At the same time, there's this rich, buttery vanilla cookies smell that makes me so hungry. It's like someone played a cruel joke on you and mashed up the worlds most delicious vanilla cookies into the world's most awesome smelling apple soap.

TL;DR: Vanilla cookies mashed into luxurious apple soap.

Black Santalum Cider

"Rich Black Sandalwood drizzled into an old oak barrel, sticks of cinnamon, tart apple slices, cardamom and nutmeg."

This is an apple cider and very old wood. My friends and I were debating on the old wood bit. I think it smells like dark, old wood you get in the homes of Chinese old people or those traditional stores selling traditional items that are exotic even to me. The kind of wood that has been smoked over many years by thousands of joss sticks. While that old wood bit may not sounds appealing to most people, I've gotten jaded by so many apple cider scents that this is just mesmerizing. I swear I can smell my grandma in this.

TL;DR: Apple cider party at my grandma's home.

Overview: I think they captured that old, blackened wood smell really accurately, because everyone who sniffed this kept insisting the wood smells like wood furniture in their respective grandparents' homes. Screw you all, it's my grandma's home.

Blood Moon

"Black Kashmir, Black Musk, Moon Incense, Black Dragon's Blood, Bastet's Black Amber, VA Nightshade, Sweet Boswellia Frankincense Tears and Hungarian Red Geranium."

It starts off with a very old scent, then takes on a powdery cool quality. It ends up smelling like an old lady who takes care of herself, dresses up nice (though in a dotty, old lady fashion), uses her favourite powdery, old lady scents to smell nice...but still has that old smell of herbal salves on her. Kinda burried in the background, but it's there.

You just know she's also carrying a giant bag.
TL;DR: Old lady perfume on a well-groomed old lady with old lady tastes.

Overview: Yeah, this scent isn't as dark and mysterious as I'd expect from that description. It's a scent that makes you think you're going to get a big, powdery-smelling hug from a sweet, old lady.

Cobra Venom

"Pumpkin spice infused Carnation, N2 Musk, Black Fig, Sugared Snake & Spider Candied Webs, Blood Heliotrope, French Vanille, Black Crystal Vanilla Musk, Black Cardamom Pod, Egyptian Amber Musk Essence, Egyptian Patchouli and Cemetery Ginger Root."

It's like a pumpkin spiced tea. That's it. Just heavenly pumpkin spiced tea -slightly creamy, but not milky.

TL;DR: Pumpkin spiced tea.

Overview: I can't smell all that in this, but I guess they contributed in some way to create this amazing tea-like scent. I was looking to buy a full-size of this scent since I really like it, but the description I got on NAVA's  site is different from the description I got from Ajevie's decant, so I'm not sure if they're the same scent. I don't think I'll risk getting it.

Dracula

"Corrupted incense, blood musk, clove, Tunisian myrrh and blood red pomegranate."

It starts of as a cool, dusty sort of cologne smell. After about 5 minutes, there's a sour yet still sweet peppercorn sort of scent to it. I'm thinking peppercorns because the spiciness is very mild in this, and it has that peppercorn sort of slight sourness to it. It doesn't smell like food though! It smells masculine, deep, barest hint of spicy and oh so sophisticated. It's a scent you expect on a hot guy wearing a suit yet still the kind of guy who can laugh at himself and be silly.

I kinda want this dude to be the model for this scent:

It's really hard not to have a celebrity crush on Wil Wheaton...his personality makes him hot..

It's not really for me but I definitely like it.

TL;DR: Masculine/unisex peppercorn scent.

Overview: Guess the pomegranate mixed with wood created a peppercorn scent. I tried this on my guy and it smells sooo good on him. There's a bit of a dry, dusty wood scent on him as it dries down, but I still love it.

Gunwitch

"Kashmir Red Musk, Himalayan Cedarwood, Hungarian Patchouli, Romanian Vetiver, Egyptian Sandalwood, Arabian Frankincense Resin, Egyptian Myrrh, Black Pepper Whole & sifted in a Cedar Barrel aged."

It starts off petrifyingly with that game-y smell again that I got from Kashmir chocolate. And wood. The wood is more of an old wood you get at Buddhist temples - the kind of wood that smells strongly of age and incense. By about 5 minutes, the game-y smell is gone and this is nice enough with all the ancient temple wood smell. Even though the scent does get sweeter with time, it's still ancient temple wood.

I like it but it's not really for me. It's a smell that makes me think of very wise, old Buddhist monks and I'm not wise or old enough. I thought it was just me, but my guy took a sniff of me and without me saying anything, he just went, "You smell like an old, Chinese monk. There's that temple smell."

This is actually Maha Ghosananda, a Cambodian monk. His achievements are extraordinary, and I really recommend reading about his life here.
Image courtesy of The Liberated Life Project

TL;DR: Wise, old Buddhist monks.

Overview: Judging from what I got from Kashmir Chocolate (review below) and this scent, I have to avoid anything with Kashmir from NAVA. I've never been to Kashmir, but if I'm basing my impression of Kashmir from NAVA's Kashmir scents, I'd imagine Kashmir to be overflowing with smelly bush animals.

Kashmir Chocolate

"Dark chocolate, Peruvian Chocolate, Cocoa, Hot Chocolate, Deep blood musk. Deep blood red musk blended together with Red Egyptian Musk (Crimson)."

Oh there's chocolate alright. Bitter, dark chocolate. There's also this game-y, herbal smell that various perfumers have labelled as opium or patchouli. It starts turning into very game-y milk at around 10-20 minutes. I really like the chocolate bit but the game-y part is horrible. It's like the milk of some smelly bush animal (anything except kudus..they're delicious) blended with chocolate. Just no.

TL;DR: Game-y milk with chocolate

Overview: I guess it's the deep blood part making it smell game-y? Either way, "Kashmir" from NAVA is officially my "death note".

"Hungarian Blue Jasmine, Eternal Ankh Vanilla, Blue Sandalwood, Rosewood Musk, Santalum White, N6 (sweet Musk), Egyptian Musk and Sensual White Musk."

Oh this is gorgeous, it's like a sweet, clean floral syrup. It's definitely a white floral. There's also hints of that fresh smell that reminds me of cut leaves in the background, which makes this scent so refreshing. As it wears on, it develops a bit of a floral musk that's very sensual. If the scent stayed light, it'll be GORGEOUS. I'd totally pick this pic as a perfume ad:

I doubt she can walk elegantly without crashing into things with a hat that covers half her face though.
Gorgeous picture by Jean-Baptiste Fort

It's bright, light, elegant and refined, yet so very sensual. The scent is so perfect for someone in their late 20s & early 30s.

Unfortunately, the scent gets heavier and heavier and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be this way or it's my skin chemistry amping up the musk part. By 20 min, it's a scent that's more for a woman in her 40s.  It's like smelling the elegant, refined lady turn into an elegant, refined old lady.

TL;DR: Very sensual, refined older lady.

"Halloween spices of Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Clove and Cardamom blended into a Leather accord, Teak and Sandalwood Extract, Cotton Candy accord, French Vanilla Elixir, Lavender, Mandarin and NA Amber."

It's a soft, cottony, cinnamon and spices. It's not creamy cinnamon and spices, which is pretty often done, it's actually a soft, non-edible scent. It's a smell that makes you think of cotton and babies. With cinnamon. The effect is pretty awesome. It's like you're in a baby's room during the holidays, when the smell of the cinnamon candle burning in the house even reaches the baby's room.

Unfortunately after about 40 min, the scent this turns to is closer to cinnamon baby powder you put on a baby's butt. Yup, there's even that slightly off smell you get after a diaper change. It mostly smells nice after the baby's all cleaned and powdered, but there's still something off. You can clean that baby all you want, and cover it with all sorts of nice smelling powders & oils until it smells mostly amazing, but you still can't hide the fact that that baby sat on its own poop for a while. It no longer smells like poop and there's no traces of poop...but you can sniff something is off.

I noticed this scent made my skin feel warm, even though I didn't break out in hives. If you have a cinnamon sensitivity, it may be a good idea to test patch with this scent.

TL;DR: Soft, cottony cinnamon & spices, turning into cinnamon baby powder on a baby's butt after a diaper change.

Overview: I'm guessing it's the leather that's creating that off smell. I tried sniffing it again and yup, it's leather -the strong, bitter, brand new leather scent that's animalistic and heavy on chemicals all at once.

"Raspberry Tea perfumed with NA Raspberry, Black Raspberry, Egyptian Blackberry, a drop of Crystal, a touch of Black Rose petal then blended into a deep black tea perfume and sweetened with resin of amber and Teak."

I smelled a burst raspberries at first, but it muddled with a soft, musky scent that somehow strikes me as pink musk. It's how I imagine this scene would smell like:

Trust me, it smells like an explosion of pink.
Photography by Mascha Seitz. Her work is GORGEOUS!

It's a fun, albeit slightly artificial, scent, and something I can see as a Victoria's Secret or Body Shop scent. It's a bit too young for me since it strikes me more as a late teens/early-20s sort of scent.

TL;DR: Pink musk.

Vampire Queen

"Black Honey, Blood Wine and Cardamom. Threads of Black Saffron, Nile Patchouli and Black Musk. A drop of Blood Musk, Temple NA and Crimson scent the Vampire Queen."

This starts off as honeyed tart fruits and old wood  - the old wood bit is bitter and medicinal.

After slightly over 20 minutes, the old wood bit melded into the scent and turns it into this intoxicating scent. It's like sniffing and exotic, tart, gourmet candy. It'll be brownish-red in colour and clear, looks like a jewel, isn't so sweet, but is a burst of flavour in your mouth. There's still a hint of bitterness in it, but it just grounds the scent to stop it from going too sweet. It's how I imagine this candy would smell like:
This is actually for sale on Etsy! You can buy it from Lecarre Lollipops here! I'm planning to get it once my mail forwarding address is live!

I'm not sure if it's just my skin chemistry making this smell awesome though. A bit got on my cardigan, and the bitter, medicinal smell just doesn't disappear.

TL;DR: Candied Chinese medicinal herbs.

Overview: NAVA'S descriptions are hard to figure out for someone new to their brand. What's Temple NA??
